If you’re looking for a premium earplug option in the UK that truly balances hearing protection with natural sound, Phonak Serenity Choice earplugs deserve serious consideration. I bet you didnt know that Phonak, the major hearing aids manufacturer, offers music, sleeping and other types of earplugs too. Below is a focused look at what this product line offers and what features make it stand out.
How loud is too loud?
Let's start with setting a ground rule. How loud is too loud? There is a consensus that any sound louder than 85 dB is too loud and can cause temporary or permanent damage to your auditory system.

How well are we protecting our ears from excessive loud noise?
Not very good. I did a quick research on this topic and realised that millions of people are exposing their auditory system to excessive loud noise as part of their work or hobby, often not knowingly.
1.1 billion people are estimated to be at risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) around the world
50% of young people listen to their music or other audio too loudly
Noise-induced hearing loss is the second most common reason for occupational
health-related insurance claims. As a result, 20,000 new cases of work-related hearing problems are reported annually as a result of hazardous workplace noise
70% of people exposed to loud noise never or seldom wear hearing protection

What are the different models of earplugs in the market?
There are 3 different earplugs in the market: ear foams, tube-filtered earplugs and acoustic filter earplugs.

As you can see, the frequency responses of the above three models differ. Only the acoustically optimised earplugs are engineered to provide the attenuation needed for the application, e.g. Music earplugs.

What are the top attributes of a good earplug?
There are 3 important attributes of cheaper earplugs that you buy on Amazon, and the premium ones:
Cancels noise and loud sound - Has a wide range of solutions for individual situations (e.g. sleep, music, shooting, biking,...)
Keeps relevant sound and speech - It should dampen the sound while preserving the character and details; otherwise, you hear a distorted sound. It should allow natural hearing, situational awareness and communication.
Let the ear breathe - Filters allow ventilation of the ear to prevent a build-up
of excess moisture
Quick Summary — Phonak Serenity Choice earplugs
Use‑Specific Models: Rather than a one‑size‑fits‑all approach, Phonak earplug offers different models tailored for sleep, work, hunting/shooting, and comfort/focus. This helps users choose the right tool for the job.
Filter‑Based Attenuation: Acoustic filters reduce harmful sound while preserving important audio cues like speech or music detail. Users can select filters with lighter or stronger attenuation.
Comfort & Ventilation: Especially in the Sleep model, the design focuses on comfort for side sleepers, minimising pressure points and reducing the “hot ear” feeling.
What makes Phonak earplugs stand out
Tailored Applications: Each model is designed with a specific environment in mind, giving you more precision than generic plugs.
Sound Preservation: Unlike foam plugs that muffle everything, Phonak Serenity earplugs aim to reduce volume while keeping clarity intact.
Extended Comfort: Softer materials and ergonomic design allow longer wear, whether overnight or across a full work shift.
Transparent Specs: Published attenuation values mean you can compare models directly and make an informed choice.

Do Phonak earplugs come in custom-made?
Yes, the Phonak Serenity Choice Plus is a range of custom-made earplugs by Phonak. They are available in ear-canal or full-concha custom. A visit to our clinic is required to make impressions of your ear canals. The other feature of the Phonak custom earplugs is that you can choose from a selection of Low, Medium, High, and Max attenuation level filters. We will send the impressions to the Phonak lab, and you will receive the custom-made earplugs in your mailbox. Please book your appointment to make custom earplugs here.
Do Phonak earplugs come in different attenuation levels?
Phonak earplugs come in two lines of products. The standard Phonak earplugs come in 3 different sizes but with a single attenuation filter. The Phonak custom-made line of earplugs, called Phonak Serenity Choice Plus, allows you to choose and fit filters when you place your order. They also come in Silicon or Acrylic, which provides optionality for those who may have allergies to one or the other.
Please see the table below for more guidance, and contact us if you have any questions. You can buy a spare filter or a different attenuation level for different applications.

Bottom Line
Phonak Serenity Choice offers a model‑specific, filter‑based approach that makes it stand out in the UK earplug market. If you want natural sound and tailored protection for specific environments, it’s worth shortlisting. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
