Phonak announced the release of the Infinio Ultra family of hearing aids in October 2025. Phonak Infinio and Phonak Infinio Sphere hearing aids can be upgraded to Ultra with a quick in-clinic firmware update (sorry, not through telecare). The hardware of the hearing aids is the same; the software can be upgraded. For this upgrade, Phonak has also increased the price of Infinio products by about 7 per cent across the range. Can I stay in the previous Infinio firmware?
Yes. However, I do encourage you to do the upgrade to Ultra. Upgrading your Phonak Infinio or Infinio Sphere to the Ultra will bring several benefits to you (more follows), but you do not have to upgrade. They will be working fine even without the upgrade. The upgrade of the Infinio series to Ultra is a performance enhancement. The upgrade is not to fix a firmware problem.
What are the benefits of upgrading to Infinio Ultra?
The upgrade to Infinio Ultra is all about higher performance in speech in noise and battery life. The Upgrade to Ultra will bring in several benefits to your Phonak Infinio or Infinio Sphere, including:
Faster, smarter AI: Phonak upgraded its operating software from AutoSense 6.0 to 7.0. Also, the DEEPSONIC chip in Sphere models has been upgraded from 1.0 to 2.0. They also trained their DNN algorithm with 18 times more samples for a more accurate AI processing of the soundscape. All this means that the Ultra will give you a better speech in noise experience.
Better battery life: With smarter software in Ultra models, the chips in the hearing aids are working more efficiently and can offer longer battery run time. Phonak claims Infinio Ultra can run 31 hours, and the Sphere Ultra can offer 51 hours of run time on a full charge. The condition of the test is for a mild hearing loss with no streaming. Better news, in my opinion, is that the Sphere Ultra can offer 11 hours of run time when used in Spheric mode all the time, which is a nice jump from 7 hours in the previous model.
Clearer 360° speech handling: It totally makes sense that with the use of AI, you get better spatial processing. Ultra Sphere continues Phonak’s spatial focus, building on the separate real-time AI chip introduced with Sphere.
One-step Bluetooth pairing: Set up once in the myPhonak app; keep up to 8 saved pairings with 2 active at a time. Nothing changed much on the connectivity front.
EasyGuardâ„¢ wax filters: A wipe-clean, acoustically transparent membrane designed to reduce wax-related issues versus traditional filters. Phonak released a new model of domes with the Ultra, which can also be used for older models of Phonak aids. This new model offers less hassle of blockage of the receiver tip with earwax. At the time of this article, this model dome is available only in the Open-Dome model.
How much improvement does the upgrade to Infinio Sphere Ultra make?
Infinio Sohere Ultra delivers up to 31% improvement in speech understanding compared to Infinio R. The reason is that Spheric Speech Clarity extracts, enhances, and integrates speech in real-time to deliver unprecedented speech clarity in noise from any direction.
How does this work? The improvement in Spheric Ultra is twofold:
Autosense 7.0 - The aid is smarter to pick the optimum setting when you move through different soundscapes and noise signatures. According to Phonak, the Autosense 7.0 is 24% more accurate in determining the correct soundscape compared to Autosense 6.0.
DEEPSONIC 2.0 - Your Infinio Sphere holds a dedicated chip for AI and DNN processing called DEEPSONIC. The chip stayed the same, but its algorithm, as well as the data set that the algorithm has been trained got a massive upgrade. According to Phonak, the Sphere Ultra's DNN performance has been improved by 35%.
Is there a CROS model in the Infinio range of hearing aids?
There is no CROS model for Infinio Sphere, but there is a CROS-compatible transmitter for Infinio Ultra. Please see this article for more on Phonak Infinio Cros hearing aids.
How can I upgrade my Phonak Infinio and Infinio Sphere to Ultra?
The upgrade of your Phonak Infinio or Infinio Sphere needs to be done in the clinic. At the moment, upgrading your Infinio hearing aids to Ultra cannot be done over telecare. You will have one of these two options to upgrade your hearing aids to Infinio Ultra:
Book an appointment with your audiologist for an in-clinic appointment. The upgrade only needs a 20-minute visit. If you purchased your hearing aids from HearingNow, please take advantage of the period of free aftercare period and plan a visit to the clinic. Please get in touch so we can plan a visit for you.
Ship your hearing aids to your audiologist so they can be upgraded for you. If you purchased your Phonak Infinio or Infinio Sphere from HearingNow, please use the address on our support page to ship them to us for a complimentary upgrade. Please make sure to send us an email with your tracking number. Also, please leave a clear return instruction with the hearing aids.
Do I have to pay to upgrade my Phonak Infinio to Ultra?
It depends on the terms of the purchase you had with your audiologist. If you didnt purchase your Phonak Infinio or Infinio Sphere from HearingNow but want to upgrade them to Ultra, you can book an appointment with us so we can do it for you.
Can I upgrade my Phonak Infinio Sphere to Ultra via telecare?
Unfortunately, the hearing aids need to be physically in the clinic.

How much bigger is Phonak Infinio Sphere compared to Phonak Infinio?

What is the best price for Phonak Infinio Sphere?
As emphasised before, the price of the hearing aids needs to be considered in the context of the overall product, warranty and aftercare you receive. My advice is to be careful when you compare only the price of the Phonak Sphere Ultra between suppliers A and B. For example, you can buy Phonak Sphere Ultra at about £4000 at Boots Hearing. The advantage of purchasing from Boots is that you receive free aftercare over the 3-year warranty period.
My advice is to consider a supplier who offers the longest warranty period, so your investment is secured for a longer time.
Another aspect is access to in-clinic appointments. You may find cheap offers for a pair of Phonak Infinio Sphere i90 through online retailers such as Wholesale Hearing, but then you won't have access to a clinic because they do not have a clinic. Again, I need to remind you that the best way to tune up and set your hearing aids is to be fitted in the clinic. Telecare and remote support are only the second-best option. Does Phonak Infinio come in in-the-ear form too?
